Re: tool to design xform

marnold
There's an eclipse plug-in here: http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/vxd

But I wouldn't recommend it. I tried it, and it was flakey as hell.
(I wanted to build an XForm automatically from a XML Schema...)  Also
doesn't look like it's been updated since 2006...

Malcolm

The eclipse plugin ("Orbeon Studio") can be found here:
http://forge.objectweb.org/projects/ops/

But personally, i prefer using eclipse without that plugin - AFAIK it
isn't maintained any more, and there may be problems with newer versions
of eclipse. IMHO it's preferable to add the xforms-related schemata to
eclipse's schema catalogue (there are directions in the mailing-list
archives how to do this) and use the xml editor tools available for
eclipse to create the different files.

There is a tool Intalio | BPMS Designer. It is a plug of the eclipse.

You can find at: http://bpms.intalio.com/downloads.html

Absolutely right. We won't work on that plugin anymore. And it is not
really for designing forms anyway.

There is no Form Builder in Orbeon Forms 3.6. We have a new Form
Builder in alpha now, as you may have seen:

   http://www.orbeon.com/forms/builder

A couple of questions:

* Why do you want an Eclipse plugin?

* Are you interested in a visual form designer, or in a text-based XML
editor?

Ok, then Form Builder will be your solution as far as Orbeon is
concerned.

It doesn't run as an Eclipse plugin, but there is no reason you
couldn't run it within a browser embedded into Eclipse.

Re: Re: Re: Re: tool to design xform

Hugues Malphettes
I am excited to hear interest in this area.

We are planning to work on an eclipse feature to integrate the
form-builder in eclipse:
- launch the form-builder from eclipse when an xform is edited.
- save the form in the eclipse-project.
It will consist of packaging the form-builder as an osgi-bundle and
then to implement the persistence layer of orbeon that saves the form.

If that sounds like a good idea we would like to develop it within the
orbeon community.
We have not started the actual development for this.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tool to design xform

Hugues Malphettes
Hi everyone,

I started the prototype of an eclipse plugin to "wrap" orbeon's form builder.
It depends only on the minimal eclipse distribution ("eclipse
platform", version 3.3 or 3.4)
1- Browse to locate orbeon's war or orbeon's webapp folder
2- Double click on an *.xform" file or ".xform2" file
This lazily starts a JettyServer on port 18080 that launches the orbeon webapp.
Then it open the embedded browser as if it was an editor (see attached
screenshot)

I have attached the sources of the plugin that does this.
Currently with a copyright Intalio and a license EPL (opened for discussion).
If you are interested in trying it, Open an eclipse-PDE (Eclipse-SDK
aka classic for example) and import the attached archived project.
Then run eclipse in development mode as usual with PDE.

Next step consists of implementing the crud servlet that would receive
the load and save requests from orbeon to load the corresponding xform
in the eclipse project: currently the editor loads with a GET
htpp://localhost:127.0.0:18080/orbeon/fr/orbeon/builder
If you could point me to the code to read to understand what URL I
should place for the load and where to start for the crude servlet I
would be very grateful.

Also, I have some issues currently with the latest nightly builds.
The screenshot I have attached is for the nightly from mid-may.
With the nightly from yesterday and today, the logs (attached) show
plenty of scary statements and finish by an NPE in saxon.

I might be accumulating difficulties as I am running linux with
firefox-3.0 and I am using jetty-5.1.1 that is already embedded by
eclipse.

Let me know if this sounds interesting and give me some hints to push
it further eventually.

Cheers,
Hugues.

Hi Hugues,

Great work!

We have some documentation on the persistence layer which we
tentatively put here:

   http://sites.google.com/a/orbeon.com/forms/
FormBuilderIntegrationNotes

Hopefully that will help.

Regarding the Saxon NPE, it is a funny one. We try to store a Saxon
AtomicValue to the session. Then Jetty attempts to make a comparison
of something to such a value to another one, which is null. Why, I
don't know. It can't be that we pass a null value to the session, if I
read my code correctly.

What's worse is that in Saxon 9, equals() on AtomicValue throws an
exception (we still use Saxon 8). So that will fail too. It seems that
this comparison doesn't happen with Tomcat.

Firefox 3 should be just fine, that's what we use.
