Orbeon Forms Builder Doesn't Work

Greg Kenny

This is my second post to this mailing list.  As a new user, I am unsure if this is getting out to the community but I do know I am receiving posts so I will take a different approach.  I’m simply asking two questions that anyone should be able to answer in just a few seconds.  The third question only applies if you use the Forms Builder.

Question #1:  Is anyone receiving this post (Yes or No)?

Question #2:  Does anyone out there use Orbeon Forms Builder or do you just code your xforms using a text editor and let Orbeon do the interpretive work for you?

Question #3:  If you use Orbeon Forms Builder, then what is the secret to getting it to work?  The reason I ask is that I have had horrible results with the Forms Builder (tried multiple versions including Beta version 3.7.1 and nightly builds) on a XAMPP environment running under Windows 2003 server.  I can certainly load this in a Linux environment but suspect I will have similar issues.

Would someone please be kind enough to respond?

Anyone having issues with the latest nightly build of Orbeon Forms Builder?  I have installed it on a Windows 2003 server running XAMPP (Apache, MySQL, PHP, Perl) with the Tomcat extension.  I can connect to the Orbeon application fine but many of the form controls do not appear in the controls panel when I try to build a form.  Additionally, the save, publish and test/review buttons will not work.  Any help would be appreciated.  Is there a functional version of Orbeon out there somewhere that I have missed.  Version 3.7.1 beta has similar issues.

Greg,
    Welcome to the community!

I don't personally use the Form Builder as I joined xforms back before Orbeon came up with the novel idea, but I certainly have played around with it

If you post more details about the problems your having with it I'm sure someone will help out

Perhaps check the archive while your waiting for a response, its likely someone has had similar problems

RE: Re: Orbeon Forms Builder Doesn't Work

Thanks for your response Ryan.  I will check the archives. So I take it you develop your forms in a text editor of some sort and then let Orbeon do the back end processing?  I'm just trying to get a sense for how the community builds their forms.  I'm beginning to get the impression that no one uses the Forms Builder app.  I am a consultant in the healthcare field and would like to create a template using xforms to document a physicians' interactions with a patient.  Trying to figure out the best way of doing that.

Thanks,
Greg

I use eclipse with the WTP plugin as a fancy XML editor and let Orbeon do the parsing of my xforms, but I think quite a large part of the community use the form builder. I think it would certainly do what you ask, like I say feel free to post any problems your having

Re: Re: RE: Re: Orbeon Forms Builder Doesn't Work

Einar Moos
IMHO, it is a question of how complex your forms are. Finally it is a matter of architecture and logic of schema.

The form builder is fine to build simple forms with simple schemas. But once you need to insert or import more schemas it is problematic.

My 5 cents,

At Orbeon we usually deploy Orbeon Forms under plain Tomcat. Since you
are encountering a problem with an untested (not to say never tried
before) environment, I would say the first step is to try to deploy it
under plain Tomcat first. If that works, then you know that somehow
the XAMPP setup is somehow causing an issue and you can address that
issue.

RE: Re: Re: Orbeon Forms Builder Doesn't Work

Greg Kenny
Well, the issues I am having with Orbeon Forms continue.  The platform I am running on is Windows 2003 Server, Apache HTTP server (latest version) and Tomcat 6.0 (also tried version 5.5).  I am beginning to believe that the issue is with Tomcat because when I start the Tomcat service, an orbeon.log file is created which reports errors about the Xerces XML parser.  I have attached the log file to this message.  I tried downloading the latest version of Xerces and placed the .jar files contained in the download in many different locations but keep getting the same errors in the log.  For those unwilling to review the log file, here are the specific error messages contained therein:

--------- portion of log file which contains errors ----------------------------

Checking for Xerces, found version Xerces-J 2.9.0 needed version Xerces-J 2.9.1
Warning: Failed find a valid Parser!

Please add an appropriate Parser to the class-path, e.g. in the 'endorsed' folder of the servlet container or in the 'endorsed' folder of the JRE.

2009-04-08 11:34:47,140 WARN  XmlLibraryChecker  - Looking for a valid Transformer...
Checking for Saxon, found version 8.8 needed version 8.9.0
Checking for Xalan, found version Xalan Java 2.5.1 needed version Xalan Java 2.7.1
Warning: Failed find a valid Transformer!

Please add an appropriate Transformer to the class-path, e.g. in the 'endorsed' folder of the servlet container or in the 'endorsed' folder of the JRE.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 'endorsed' folder referenced by the log file (see above) doesn't exist as far as I can tell.

Any ideas out there?  If I ever get this figured out, I will write an installation guide for Orbeon that is much clearer than what is available today.

Greg

Interesting. Thanks for the feedback Erik.  I will give that a try and post results in a follow up response.

Greg,

What you see in the logs is just a warning and should be of no
consequence.

Couple of questions:

* What is the symptom that things are not working?
* Can you just try installing this on your regular PC or laptop?

Really, Orbeon Forms typically works out of the box, so I guess you
just have bad luck.

RE: Re: RE: Re: Re: Orbeon Forms Builder Doesn't Work

Greg Kenny
Erik,
I have tried installing in a Virtual Machine (VM) environment and on a standalone Windows 2003 server.  I get the same results on both systems.  The main symptoms are the following:

If I go to http://localhost:8080/orbeon the main page displays as it should.  When I select the "Xforms Controls" sample form to see a demo of the different controls, it gives me an error message on the page saying it was unable to load (see below).

[Cannot load "/forms/orbeon/builder/form/custom-controls.xbl" with webapp loader]

When I start the Forms Builder, the panel on the left that is supposed to have a bunch of controls only has "new section" and "new grid" available.  I would have attached a screen capture to this email, but the mailing list won't allow it.

Yes, I agree that I have had significant bad luck.

Greg,

no, that's not bad luck, that's is IMHO just not *trying enough*.

Shut down Tomcat. Delete orbeon.war at the root of webapps, and the orbeon folder under webapps.
Deploy the the latest orbeon.war on Tomcat.

Test.

Courage!

Einar,
I have done what you have suggested no less than three times before.  Doing it again and expecting different results is insanity...not courage. IMHO. :)

Greg,

To make sure I just downloaded the latest nightly and deployed it on
my laptop with the following environment:

* OS X
* Java 5 VM
* Tomcat 5.5.27

Things work just fine. Is that Windows 2003 machine the only machine
you have access to?

Usually it is a sign of insanity, but not in this case :). The file
custom-controls.xbl has been removed recently and you might have
grabbed a "bad build" where that file was removed but was still used
somewhere. Like Erik said, the latest nightly build don't have this
problem, so you might want to try this one again. And you'll let us
know how it works for you.
