Form builder/Custom componenta

msalmadan@yahoo.com
am new to form builder. I am currently evaluating the form builder usability. One of the main functionality I am interested in is the "Custom Component". I am able to create different forms using the standard controls, save them, publish them and view forms data after saving. Every thing seems to be working ok. I ran into one issue with the "Custom Components". All the custom component controls that except data are not saving data provide by the end users. Do I need to do anything special to enable this feature?  I am using release:Orbeon forms 3.7.0 beta1 + 200811250823.Tomcat 5.5.27Firefox 2.0.0.20

What is the issue exactly? Disabled Save button, or something else?

Hi Erik,

No, it is not the saved button, it is something else. A form with a custom components controls show up ok after it is published. I populate standard & custom controls with values, and I am able to hit the save button. The standard controls values get saved but not the custom controls.

I view the form infromation by hitting the Edit From button form the Summary page, all the custom controls fields have empty values, where the standard fields have values.

It seems to me that the custom components persistence is not working.

Thanks,
Majeed

Re: [SS] Re: Re: Form builder/Custom componenta

Sabeer
I think, you are using controls which are available in both HTML (standard)  and XFORMS (custom) and you are able to save the value from HTML controls. As Erik has mentioned in one of his old communications, the submission of HTML page and XFORMS are different and you cannot mix it up. What you can try is that, separately submit the XFORMS and based on its submission status, submit your HTML page. You need to figure it out how you can do that, may be you can use IFRAME to show the XFORMS controls.

Thanks Sabeer. Also Thanks Erik for your earlier post.

Just to Clarify, I am using the Orbeon From builder and utilizing both standard
controls and custom controls "Custom Components" that come out of the box with the application “Form Builder”. From the toolbox in the left hand side when I am building my forms, I pick from the standard controls for example "Single-line Text" and from the  Custom Components for example I pick "US Phone Number" and go on about saving and publishing the form. Using the published form, the values from the standard controls get saved and the custom components controls do not get saved.

What is the difference between “Standard controls” and Custom Components? That I see in the Form Builder”

I thought the idea (functionality) behind the custom components and custom sections is the ability to create more controls that will behave like standard out of the box controls.

If this is not the case, how would I go about adding my own controls that will behave like the standard out of the box controls? So I do not have to mess up with the from submission and just use out of the box functionalities.

Thanks,
Majeed

Hi All,
I have downloaded the latest nightly build and the out of the box custom components is behaving still the same. Does anyone have a logical explanation of what is going on?. Am I using the custom component feature in the wrong place?

Sabeer, I do not totally understand of what you mean, excuses my lack of knowledge about the subject?  I searched the forums to find the any related topic as you stated there might be an earlier communication from Erik into the subject.

I am still trying to find out an answer to this question.

Hi Erik,

No, it is not the saved button, it is something else. A form with a custom
components controls show up ok after it is published. I populate standard &
custom controls with values, and I am able to hit the save button. The
standard controls values get saved but not the custom controls.

I view the form infromation by hitting the Edit From button form the Summary
page, all the custom controls fields have empty values, where the standard
fields have values.

It seems to me that the custom components persistence is not working.

Thanks,
Majeed

Hi All,
I have downloaded the latest nightly build and the out of the box custom components is behaving still the same.

Just to Clarify, I am using the Orbeon From builder and utilizing both standard

Using the published form, the values from the standard controls get saved and the custom components controls do not get saved.

Thanks,
Majeed

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: [SS] Re: Re: Form builder/Custom componenta

Majeed,

A few quick answers:

* The "Standard Controls" in the toolbar are meant to be the basic
controls supported by Form Builder.

* The "Custom Components" in the toolbar are meant to be more
elaborate controls built which using XBL, which can be used to extend
Form Builder.

* The "Custom Components" currently in the Form Builder toolbar are
there just for demo purposes, they haven't really been seriously
worked on yet.

* You can find their definitions in a file called standard.xbl, which
we are just now moving to custom-controls.xbl.

* I do notice some issues with reading back the data with those
example controls. That seems to work outside Form Runner though. We
will have to look into it.

I hope this helps,

-Erik

Majeed,

A few quick answers:

* The "Standard Controls" in the toolbar are meant to be the basic
controls supported by Form Builder.

* The "Custom Components" in the toolbar are meant to be more
elaborate controls built which using XBL, which can be used to extend Form
Builder.

* The "Custom Components" currently in the Form Builder toolbar are
there just for demo purposes, they haven't really been seriously worked on
yet.

* You can find their definitions in a file called standard.xbl, which we are
just now moving to custom-controls.xbl.

* I do notice some issues with reading back the data with those example
controls. That seems to work outside Form Runner though. We will have to look
into it.

I hope this helps,

-Erik

you are trying to mix up HTML controls and XFORMS controls and for XFORMS
controls, you are not able to get the values for XFORMS controls. Since you are
using Form Builder, I think, the issue is something else.

of the box with the application “Form Builder”. From the toolbox in the left
hand side when I am building my forms, I pick from the standard controls for
example "Single-line Text" and from the Custom Components for example
I pick "US Phone Number" and go on about saving and publishing the
form. Using the published form, the values from the standard controls get saved
and the custom components controls do not get saved.

(standard) and XFORMS (custom) and you are able to save the value from HTML
controls. As Erik has mentioned in one of his old communications, the submission
of HTML page and XFORMS are different and you cannot mix it up. What you can try
is that, separately submit the XFORMS and based on its submission status, submit
your HTML page. You need to figure it out how you can do that, may be you can
use IFRAME to show the XFORMS controls.

Yes, we are planning to keep the Custom Components and elaborate on
those as we go. And yes, this is all in nightly builds.
