Regarding the tab widget, is is possible to change the selected tab, further to an XForms input control event?

The id of your widget:tab will work with the toggle, e.g.:

<xforms:trigger>

<xforms:lable>goto fubar panel</xforms:table>

<xforms:toggle case="fubar-panel"/>

</xforms:trigger>

With other UI controls you probably want to make it part of an event.
