autocompletion bug

Frank
Hi,
Auto completion does not seem to work for me in normal input fields.
Is this a known issue or is there some special techniques I need to know
about?
I am using ops-3.5.1.200703310056

Thanks,
Franco

Re: autocompletion bug

Frank
Hi Again,
I should have explained - the input field does get populated once I
select from the generated pick list, but the associated instance data field
does not get updated.

Thanks again,
Franco

Franco,

It's not clear to me what the problem is as you don't describe the
problem with enough details. Can you provide an XHTML+XForms sample that
runs in the sandbox and shows the problem?

Re: autocompletion bug

Frank
Hi Erik,
I have found the same behaviour with the Government forms example
application. I have added the 'Instance-inspector'
to the DMV form.

I have attached four images:

fig1 shows the form field 'firstname' being filled in. I have typed 'p'.
At this point Firefox creates the dropdown auto-completion list that
contains 'pace'.

Fig2 shows the state of the instance data. Note that it currently just
has 'p' (since
it is all I have typed).

Fig3 shows the filled in form field once I select 'pace' from the
dropdown list.

Fig4 shows the state of the instance data AFTER I have selected 'pace'
from the drop down.

If I type anything directly into the field - the instance data gets
populated immediately. But anytime I select
from the firefox generated drop list - the instance data does not get
updated.

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Franco

Thank you for the detailed explanation and the screenshots. That
really helps. I tried to reproduce this, but I don't get to have my
Firefox make any suggestion; even if I type something that I had type
already previously in that same field. How do you get Firefox to
suggest "Pace" or anything else (in my case for the last name field I
expected Firefox would suggest Vernet as I entered that in countless
forms before)?

Re: autocompletion bug

Frank
Hi Alex,
I wish I knew! Same as you in some forms I type the same thing over and
over and firefox
does NOT suggest anything. In others I get the dropdown list. I don't do
anything different (that I know of).
I was hoping you guys may know more about firefox and browser behaviour
than I do.
Must be some firefox setting (but why only some fields are affected - I
don't know)
I am using firefox 2.0.0.6 on Windows XP.
I'll try to do some more investigations - wish me luck!?
Thanks again for looking at it.

Re: autocompletion bug

Jurģis Lukss-2
Hi Franco,

From your screenshots, it seems that your Firefox has some kind of
AutoFill form completion extension. Usually Google Toolbar behaves this
way. Sometimes Orbeon XForms input fields do not send
xforms-value-changed event, if field's value is pasted in form
clipboard. So if value is "pasted" in by an AutoFill extension, then I
believe it won't send xforms-value-changed event too and AutoComplete
field won't react on this new value.

I hope this helps,

Jurgis

The Google Toolbar has an auto-fill feature, but by default Firefox
will do some suggestions for normal form fields on its own. And I do
have that working for instance in the Google search field, but not on
that page. Strange.

Even if I can't reproduce this, the reason it doesn't work is that we
are listening on a "keyup" event, and Firefox does not send that event
when you select something from the list. Instead Firefox sends an
"input" event, which is new to me. I could try to change our code to
use this event, but I would need a reproducible test case first. If
you guys manage to get to a reproducible test case, please let me
know.

Re: autocompletion bug

Frank
In reply to this post by Jurģis Lukss-2
Hi Jurgis,
Looks like you are partly right. I un-installed all firefox extensions
(including google toolbar) but the problem remained.
Then just started looking at firefox options that related to autofill. I
found Options->Privacy->'Remember what I enter in forms and the search bar'
It was enabled! So I disabled it and this seems to fix the problem. I
enabled and disabled it a number of times and got the expected
behaviour on the form and field that was causing the problem.

Strange thing is that now I cannot reproduce this behaviour with the
government forms example that I could before!?
Also when enabled - It doesn't seem to autofill (or remember) all form
fields that had specific values entered in the past - but just a few
(random?) fields.

Seems like a firefox bug/quirky behaviour. /My solution for now is to
recommend this firefox option be disabled./

Jurgis, I think that the google toolbar may play some role in this since
some input fields are colored 'yellow' when the
google toolbar->settings->Autofill settings->Highlight fields on web
pages that autofill can update in 'yellow'

Alex, I will let you know if I can reproduce this behaviour again with
the OPS examples using this firefox option.

Thanks,
Franco

There you  go. I remembered seeing this, but wasn't sure where.

Alright, sounds good. Once we have a reproducible test case, I don't
think it will be very hard to fix this.

Re: autocompletion bug

Frank
Hi Alex,
I have found a case very similar to this problem but not exactly the
same - it may be the same underlying problem though.
The xforms-controls example has an auto-complete field with country
names on the selection controls tab.
When you type a set of characters the list narrows (as expected) with
matching entries. If i highlight the country i want and hit the
enter key, then it works fine. But if I select the required country by
clicking with the mouse it doesn't work. Do you get the same behaviour?
I get the same behaviour in this case with both firefox and ie.

I will keep looking for exact reproducible cases.

If you see this in the auto-complete field, it may be a different
problem. But I was not able to reproduce that one either. See:
