UK Hosting

I've used hosting services such as http://www.discountasp.net/ for asp.net applications, but being new to java, I don't know much about its hosting options.

What the best option for server space where I can run orbeon forms for a commercial solution? How much would it cost to purchase (and how easy to setup) your own server? I don't know much about this. Anyone got any links for info?

Likely you will want a dedicated server or
virtual server, but it may take some hunting
to find one with more than just 512M of memory.

Having purchased and set up servers -- you can
spend a lot of effort at this.

Hopefully, if you are renting a
system, someone will fix it quickly if it breaks.
(But how quickly could be an issue.... 99%
uptime still leaves open over 24hrs in a year)

applications 1G of memory for $125 a month:

And presumably they have an infrastructure that
can move your application from one hardware to
another in just a few minutes.

I am writing a content management system using orbeon to run small websites and cannot find an affordable hosting solution.

We use a New Zealand company called Rimuhosting (www.rimuhosting,com) who also specialise in Java/tomcat hosting, using Xen for shared hosting.  They give you a share of the memory of the host for your money (and you will certainly need a reasonable amount of memory to run tomcat/OF).  They don't limit the number of domains you host (but do limit the fixed IP addresses you have).  Although they're in NZ, they use hardware facilities in the US and the UK (as well as NZ).  We can certainly recommend them, both for the dependability of the service and for their (mostly free and very knowledgeable) support.

Possibly. In their "private" plans, I see that they offer 96MB and
160MB, which is not that much. In their "shared" plans, the heap (I
couldn't see the size) is shared among multiple apps, and I wonder how
that works in practice.

As far as Orbeon is concerned, you are absolutely free to do so as per
the LGPL.

However if you:

1) Make changes to the Orbeon Forms platform itself and
2) Distribute the resulting application

then you must redistribute the changes you made under the LGPL. But none
of this applies to the application you build on top of Orbeon Forms.

When you say 96MB and 160MB heaps are not that much what does that mean in practice? Does it just mean they would slow down with heavy traffic or they would generally be unreliable? The sites that will be using my CMS will have very low traffic to start with.

Just FYI, our Rimuhosting shared plan has 384 Mb, and runs tomcat/OF without problem.  We did increase from 256, which wasn't so good, though ...

I used to communicate with other systems on the Server side. What you have
to implement is your own processors, these are implemented in java.
Then you can implement the communication with devices in java or communicate
with other processes on the server using Corba for example.
I don't think you need an applet, you can do it with Xforms controls on the
client side.

Just to clarify...I am looking to drive devices on the user's workstation from within the browser to collect data (e.g. an image of a paper document or an image from a camera).

I am hoping that the resulting image would be placed within an XML document then sent back to a server for processing/workflow.

So I am guessing its either an ActivX control or an applet that will allow this type of integration to happen.

Do you already know of an applet you can use for this? If you have an
applet, and you can write JavaScript code to retrieve a representation
of the image as a string from the applet, you can in JavaScript set
the value of a hidden XForms input field. Then when you submit the
form, that value will be submitted as if it was entered by the end
user.

It depends very much on your application, but if you don't have enough
heap you can get out of memory errors, which mean that some requests
will just fail (which is obviously unreliable). Also the less memory you
have, the less you can dedicate to caches. In low-memory systems you
will also particularly want to make sure that you limit the number of
concurrent requests processed by Orbeon Forms, see in particular:
