Setting the value of a from from input:instance

Hello all,

When my xforms view loads, I want to set the value of a form element to the value currently stored in doc('input:instance').  I've tried various combinations but have had no luck.  Here's a quick overview.

1.  when my page is loaded, an URL parameter of return url configures the location to return the user to once the complete button is pressed.
2.  the return-url is grabbed using a default submission set up in page-flow.xml .  this value is stored in doc('input:instance').  when i output the following:

Part of your message seems to be missing. And I don't quite understand
what you would like to do. Maybe an example that we can run in the
XForms sandbox could help?
