Orbeon Forms 3.8 RC

Raitis
Dear community,

Today is the second anniversary of the last stable Orbeon Forms release (3.6). Two years is quite a long time in IT industry. Ironically, the 3.6 release has vanished from orbeon.com downloads section recently.

Working with nightly builds sometimes is too expensive. We spend a lot of time searching for Orbeon bug workarounds. Currently we use nightly build from July 2009 (with hacked xforms.js) which is relatively stable. Still serious bugs exist and that is unacceptable for use in production environments.

There is no official roadmap for Orbeon Forms. It seems that there is no ongoing intensive Orbeon Forms core development lately. So there's a question - when Orbeon Forms 3.8 Release Candidate will be released for community testing? We (a small group of Orbeon Forms developers) could take part in testing process. Probably other community members will participate as well.

Raitis

Re: Orbeon Forms 3.8 RC

Erik Bruchez-3
Raitis,

Thanks for your feedback. There might be a bit of confusion on
released because of naming. As Phil Karlton said: "There are only two
hard problems in Computer Science: cache invalidation and naming
things."

We called 3.7.1 (released in May) a "developer release". But in spite
of the naming, it is was a stable release. The plan is to release a
3.7.2 build on the same terms soon (in fact we were hoping to get it
out last week) and at the same time a 3.8 build which will be
identical and released to our customers.

We took 3.6 out because it is superseded by 3.7.1, and we don't want
newcomers to use 3.6 as it is quite outdated by now. But if you need
it, it is still available on the OW2 forge site:

http://forge.ow2.org/project/showfiles.php?group_id=168

There is pretty good core development going on. Check the github
commits and the list of closed issues:

http://github.com/orbeon/orbeon-forms/commits/master
http://tinyurl.com/yr44jw

In particular we had a big merge in November of changes made on a
separate branch, which include significant improvements in event
dispatching and XBL support.

This said, we definitely appreciate your offer of testing. Nightly
builds tend to stay very stable lately. So you can always play with
those and report issues. Once a 3.7.2/3.8RC is out we will announce it
here.

Erik,

That's good news. We are looking forward to seeing new stable Orbeon releases.
