Re: New blog post: "The 12-column layout"

Thanks for the 12 Columns:)
Do you think it will be possible to have 24 columns? You can use the same motivation like can be divided by 1 2 3 4 6 and ... 12 :)

Why 24?
Simple example is table with one or two signs as labels and the same with values. Something like timetable. Or maybe range of the age of the participants. I know a lot of possible cases.

I used to Firefox xfirms implememtation and we  prepared 24 grid css because 12 was too small :) It was 10 years ago and still we need 24 columns in so many forms :)

What do you think? Or maybe it can be configurable via form to have choice?

Jarek,

You are welcome!

It is technically possible, of course, but I would say that 24 columns is
unlikely to be an immediate priority.

Erik I suppose that it’s not a priority.
But I can imagine that after introducing 12 columns and major changing in the code it shouldn’t be too complicated . Ok is needed css.

And I understand business here . So maybe 24 columns should be available only in PE license?
For small forms 12 and even 4 was ok but for business or gov it’s expected :)

Now 12 for me is too little... business requirements. How to say to customer that you can’t do more columns? “ In word document its possible” ...

I want to say it’s a very good direction to build flexible tool for xforms. I’m an enthusiast of that technology!!!

We definitely understand that it could be useful. It is true that the move to
12 columns from the previous system was probably more work than it would be
to move from 12 to 24. It would still be days if not weeks of work to get
everything right.

So it all comes down to priorities given limited resources, as we have over
1,000 issues including over 500 requests for enhancements in our issue
tracker. Note that if we have a sponsor for a feature then we can move that
up the list.

Erik and what about users with PE licence? Also, need to pay additionally for enhancements? :)

The notion of prioritization applies in all cases. There is no escaping that
and it is true for Orbeon as much as it is for Google, Apple or Microsoft
(except that with those companies, you don't have any option to prioritize
the features you would really like to have).

I cannot promise  it will be paid for that but what is the estimated cost?
