Installation Trouble

Jim Logan-3
Hello everyone,

I had trouble following the instructions for installing Orbeon under Tomcat. I'm using Tomcat 6.0.16, and the instructions are for Tomcat 5.x.
  • Here's what I did with the instructions:
    • I unzipped the .war file into the prescribed Tomcat webapps/ops
    • I did not move xercesImpl.jar and xmlParserAPIs.jar because it says that step is for Tomcat 5.x, and I don't see an "endorsed" folder.
    • I restarted Tomcat
    • The Tomcat manager has no sign of the Orbeon application, and http://localhost:8080/orbeon/ gives me a 404 error.
  • Here's an alternative I tried:
    • I deployed the .war file through the Tomcat manager page
    • http://localhost:8080/orbeon/ allowed me to load forms, but they gave me errors when I did anything that hits the server.
Does Orbeon not work with Tomcat 6? Did I do something wrong?

Thanks for any help,
-Jim

Re: Installation Trouble

BTW, I just tried to literally "Unzip orbeon.war in the ops directory" (as opposed to my original interpretation of unzipping the war file from the distribution zip file into the ops directory), and that doesn't work any better.

Re: Installation Trouble

Jim Logan-3
I just discovered that the latest Firefox 3 beta is the culprit. For some reason, FF 3 works with orbeon.com, but not with localhost, even in safe mode! Internet Explorer and Firefox 2 work fine.

Any idea what the difference between orbeon.com and localhost could be? Has anyone else tried FF 3?

Thanks,
-Jim

Jim,

We have been using FF 3.0b4 for many weeks. Are you using a nightly
build or 3.6? There were issues with 3.6 which have since been fixed.

The issues with FF 3 have been fixed after 3.6. Currently you will
find those fixes in nightly builds, so I am not surprised you have
this issue with an older version.

Do you mean what will become FF 3.0 beta 6, or is there something I
don't understand?

There is some confusion: we were asking about the version of Orbeon
Forms you are using.

Oh! Thanks for the clarification. I'm using the latest, as of yesterday,
which is 3.6.0.

Thanks,

It's the latest stable, but not the latest build. Anyway, with 3.6,
Firefox 3.0b has issues, which have since been fixed. You can try a
nightly build from here and see if that helps:

Thanks, Erik. I did get that working with FF 3b5, although I had to play
around with the war file to get it to work within Tomcat 6. I think the
installation instructions could use an update for Tomcat 6.

The installation instructions say to put the war file into an "ops"
folder, but it doesn't work -- I get a 404 error, even though the Tomcat
management page says there's an "ops" application deployed. I got it to
work by dropping the war file into the "webapps" directory and letting
Tomcat deploy it as "orbeon". For some reason I had to do that twice
before it would work. Maybe I tryied to load the page before the app was
completely deployed the first time, I'm not sure.

Yes, the installation instruction incorrectly refers to "ops", as the
war file used to be named ops.war. That should read "orbeon" instead.
This misnomer in the documentation is understandably confusing! This
is now fixed. Thanks for letting us know.

Good catch! This is now fixed. You can try this in the next nightly
build. You'll let us know how this works for you when you get a chance
to try it.
