How are you calling this XPL code that calls the Java processor?
1) If it is from an XForms submission, you might just want to react to
the xforms-submit-error event, and display a message stating that
there was an error.
2) If you can change the code of your processor (I assume you can),
you can also catch the exception there, and return a description of
the error condition in an XML document, which can then test on to show
an error message to the user.
