Generic Account Management Servlet

Aaron Spike
We're currently authenticating users in Orbeon using container based authentication backed by an LDAP directory. Works well for most use cases across campus. We're now considering the possibility of using Orbeon for admissions applications. We could use our current server to allow anonymous submissions to an application form, but ideally we would want applicants to be able to save a draft application to complete at a later date. Currently drafts require authentication and we are unsure of using our centralized authentication system to deal with these temporary accounts.

We think we'd like to license a second Orbeon server which would authenticate against some separate standalone system. Is anyone aware of an account management servlet that we could simple drop in place and configure that would provide registration, password reset, container auth, etc?

Or perhaps someone with more experience could suggest a better plan of attack?

Hi Aaron,

Good question; I'm also interested! And I would say that it would be
nice if the system allowed new users to register not only with an
email, but also with their Facebook/Twitter/Google account. Maybe this
would be a good question for Stack Overflow, as it would reach a wider
audience there.

Anyhow, you'll let us know if you find something through some other channel.

Hi Aaron,

Just curious: did you find a webapp that provides this functionality? I've been asked the same question yesterday, and the best I could recommend was to use Liferay, which will handle user registration for you, provide a nice UI, and more. But using Liferay just to handle this simple use case feel overkill.

Re: Generic Account Management Servlet

I have not found anything yet. Well, nothing I can understand. But overkill is still dead so I'll have to investigate Liferay and its licensing. I was hoping to find something truly open and I'm not sure Liferay fits that description. Are there any other portals that Orbeon integrates well with?

Hi Aaron,

Liferay Community Edition is LGPL, so that should be fine from that perspective. And Liferay is the only portal actively tested and supported by Orbeon Forms at this point. And if you're looking for an "open" solution, I don't think you'd be much interested in the other "most popular" portals, like WebSphere or WebLogic Portal.
