Form with large number of fields

Jussi Ryömä
Hi,

I'm evaluating a suitable tool for designing a form with large number of fields. The Orbeon Form Builder looks like a suitable tool for non-technical person to make modifications to forms. There is an example, which converts the sections to tabs. However, as I have lots of fields, I would like to have both sections and tabs so that user can hide the parts of the form he is not interested. Is there any example which shows both sections and tabs? Or is it possible to have sections inside tabs at all? Is it e.g. possible to design a form with sections with form builder and copy that data inside a tab? I tried that but it did not show sections (not sure if I did it in the right way).

Thanks,
Jussi

Jussi,

At this time this is not supported in the builder, but we are working
on it (both nested sections and tabs).

I assume you are referring to the XForms Controls example, which takes
the Controls form and places sections into tabs?

You could use a smilar approach to transform some sections into tabs
and some into sections-within-tabs. This would require some kind of
XSLT preprocessing step first. It will be a bit tricky. The best would
be to wait for this feature to be fully baked into Form Builder/Form
Runner if possible.

VS: Re: Form with large number of fields

Thanks Erik,

Yes I am referring to he XForms Controls example. So it is possible to have sections within tabs in current release but it just need some manual work.

Do you have any estimate when this will be available in Form Builder?

Jussi

Jussi,

We aim at releasing one major version of Orbeon Forms per year, and
the last one came out in May 2011, so right now we are aiming at Q2
2012. Nightly builds should have something reasonably stable before
that.
