Form Versioning

Cullen, Peter

Hello,

Can you please clarify the status on form versioning? Per the user guide: “NOTE: As of June 2009, Form Builder has very limited support for versioning of form definitions. While you can publish a form multiple times, the new version overwrites the older version, therefore caution must be applied.”

Given that’s it’s nearly 2012, have there been any updates? Also, it sounds like this is a limitation in Form Builder itself. So, if you just edit the xhtml manually (let’s leave aside power users who would have intended to give permission to edit the forms themselves), can you implement your own versioning scheme? Is there a way to pull forms in from an external source?

Thanks,

Peter,

Unfortunately nothing has changed in this respect since then.

We have some ideas about this feature on the wiki:

http://wiki.orbeon.com/forms/projects/form-runner-builder/form-builder-versioning

The Oracle persistence layer has something related to versioning, but
this is limited to the persistence layer and does no surface to the
user interface, see:

http://wiki.orbeon.com/forms/doc/developer-guide/form-runner/oracle-and-mysql-persistence-layers?pli=1#TOC-Oracle3

This approach could be applied to your own persistence layer.
