If your XForms page (app) is implemented in HTML then you are limited by the choices of image format the targeted browser supports.
For more info on images and XForms see the
5.1 Inline Rendition of Non-Text Media Types chapter of the Xforms spec.
However, depending on your particular situation you might be able to convert formats using a server-side app like ImageMagick. Possibly there are web services that would allow converting XForms-uploaded images from one to a different file format.
