Timeout on Submissions?

Hi all, Is there a time out on submissions at all, I am
using an submission[@replace=”instance”] which is running
acceptably slow in firefox and showing the “Stop Script” error,
clicking continue a couple of times shows the results. The result in IE is the Unexpected response from server
message, but the logging events show my XPL is still running. I wondered if
there is a timeout or something sent back from the server? Is there anyway to
disable this. I’m using a fairly recent build and this page/xpl had

Ryan,
You can't set a timeout at this point, but it wouldn't necessarily be very hard to do. You could imagine additional attribute, like: <xforms:submission xxforms:timeout="10000"> that would set a timeout to 10 seconds. If the server does not respond in 10 seconds, you would get an xforms-submit-error event. Would that do the trick? I don't really want to set a timeout for the submission, the reason I asked is that I'm having problems with a submission that doesn't seem to wait for the XPL to finish. Any idea why this would happen? My fault: I misread your first email. First, I am wondering if the "Stop Script" error Firefox is showing is really related to the XPL taking a long time to respond, because while the Ajax request runs, there is no JavaScript code running and so Firefox should not ask you if you want to stop the script. Is the CPU heavily used by Firefox before you get this message? If it is the case, that is a sign that some JavaScript is actually taking a long time to execute. OK, so it looks like the JavaScript code takes quite a bit of time to process this information. I am sure there is certainly room for improvement there, and it would help to have a case we can reproduce. Does this happen on a specific page only? Is there something particular about that page? I believe this is the same issue I was seeing when I posted the thread "Slowness in Javascript XForms Initialization Code" Sorry I didn't realize you had the same issue, otherwise I would have continued the thread. What I've found so far is that xformsInitializeControlsUnder() in xforms.js is taking a long time to run especially when your page has a large number of controls. xformsInitializeControlsUnder() has to go through every element on the page that's relevant to XForms, so it's run time grows linearly with the size of your form. On a form with approx 1500 lines of XForms source, I was getting the Firefox javascript timeout message which default to 5 seconds. I was able to improve performance dramatically by commenting out the last line that calls xformsUpdateStyle() within the main loop of xformsInitializeControlsUnder(). Just by doing that the page initialization time improved 75%. So far what I've found is that commenting out xformsUpdateStyle() breaks only the calendar control and the <xforms:help> floating popup; everything else seems to work fine. Another thing I tried was to rewrite the hasClass() function in dom.js to not use regular expression matching. That cut the run-time another 5% or so. Erik indicated that there should be lot of room for optimization in the Javascript code. A bug was entered for this in the tracker http://forge.objectweb.org/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=305636&group_id=168&atid=350207 I suggest we bump up the priority of this issue so that it can be fixed by the 3.1 release. Another thing I noticed you said you were doing a lot of nested repeats. I don't know if you were (like I was) using a lot of bind statements like <xforms:bind nodeset="foo" relevant="count(following-sibling::foo) > 0"/> to enable insertion into empty nodesets which was the recommended way to do it in the OPS 3.0 documentation. I just changed my forms to use the new @origin and @context attributes on <xforms:insert> to enable insertion into empty nodesets, and got rid of all the bind statements to hide the last element of a nodeset, and now the page loading time has improved dramatically. It's down to about 1.8 seconds from 5.5 seconds (which caused the Firefox slow javascript warning). So I suspect all those bind statements caused a lot of Javascript processing overhead.
