Check box default checked

How do you check a checkbox by default?

 <xforms:select ref="cov_rec" appearance="full">
                          <xforms:choices><xforms:item><xforms:label>Recommendations</xforms:label><xforms:value>1</xforms:value></xforms:item></xforms:choices>
                            <xforms:alert></xforms:alert>
                          </xforms:select>

Hi John,

What value is set in the model that the control is bound to
when it is checked?  Then put that value in the model before
it is displayed.
